It is NOT IN SETTINGS on your device.
Hook up to your computer/iTunes, select the device, look at the upper part
of the Summary Tab. It will have the iOS that is on the device, the date it
last checked/next check for updates. There is also a "check for updates"
button right there you can click on to double-check.
I suspect that if a system update doesn't show as a badge on your settings
icon, then the device is on the last iOS it can use. But I don't *know for
sure*.
