If everyone used mobile for calling and ditched the POTS, how would everyone access the internet? The Telco's still need to provide a cable infrastructure, as that is what mobile uses for 99% of the calls. Phone to tower is wireless, from there its cable to the tower nearest the receiver.
Broadband still needs cable, whether that be POTS or fibre. With no landline phone, the cable still stays there and is used, or replaced by fibre, but still used. Maintenance costs won't drop, and if everyone used mobiles for calls, I expect the tech support cost would increase. Customer numbers stay the same. The Telco's still need the same, if not more revenue.

Maybe, but it looks as tho they'll all cost an arm and a leg. The internet can't handle all telephone traffic, can it? There'd still have to be a hand-off to wire, no? Somehow, ATT and Verizon will stay in charge, plugged into your credit card.

Once all cellphone owners get rid of their POTS phones, I think there will be quite a few more ways to get phone calls over the Internet than what's out there now.\ \ /\ Alice.( ). This is something Steve Jobs could have worked on - getting rid of separate phones - making telecom just another app. We're moving in that direction, but phoning is such a money maker that it looks as tho it'll be around for a very long time. Oh, well, if that's the worst bump in our life's road .... --david@luda.netpad4
