Good for the company, I suppose. Not always good for the customer.

[iPad] iPad

A few paragraphs from a WSJ article today.  It's how I'm feeling at the moment.  My Air 2 is fine for reading, which is most of what I use it for, and the new iPads just don't seem a compelling upgrade.  A thousand dollars is a lot of money.

Apple just delivered a brand new iPad that it says features "a brighter 9.7-inch Retina® display and best-in-class performance at its most affordable price ever."

Here's my Honest Press Release®: There's a new iPad that's a teensy bit faster and brighter than the last one, and they're pretty much otherwise indistinguishable. Oh, and it starts $70 cheaper.

The iPad has descended from one of Apple's most-hyped products to one of its slowest to evolve. Even last year's 9.7-inch "Pro" model looks like a fraternal twin of the 2013 iPad Air. That doesn't mean they aren't worth owning: iPads, which outsell Macs, serve many of us well from vacation spots to children's playrooms to, yes, bathrooms.

The pickle Apple is in is that iPads are mostly not worth upgrading. I know plenty of folks still reading books with their 2011-era iPad 2. In part, that's because they're so flippin' expensive, after Apple gouges you for extra storage. But iPads are long lasting also because they're sturdy, and Apple has done a good job of keeping their software fresh. It's one Apple product that doesn't reek of planned obsolescence.

Re: [iPad] Apple: A Recipe for the Next Five Years

Apple has traditionally used software to drive hardware sales and they still make a tidy profit off the hardware. Certainly though I see services as a growing portion of the pie. Which I understand because iPhones easily last 3 years. iPads longer. All these things just last. I daily use two Apple products almost a decade old. The need to replace just isn't there when stuff just works and keeps on working. And they want revenue to grow and the article even says that the growth of services will outpace the growth of hardware but both will still have growth. One will just have a growth that outpaces the other growth. In my limited understanding all growth is good.

Hardware spinoff in the offing?  If so, good riddance to the rest.

About half that time on my iPhone 6s updating OTA yesterday. So far everything seems the same.

[iPad] Solved? iPad iOS 10.3

I just found an Apple page saying iOS 10.x is compatible with iPad 4. Presumably I need to wait for the Software Update to notice that.

[iPad] iOS 10.3

Both my phone and iPad are running iOS 10.2.1. My iPhone 6s says I can install iOS 10.3, but my iPad 4 says (so far) I'm up to date with 10.2.1. Sometimes the iPad Software Update is slow to notice an upgrade available. Is iPad 4 eligible for 10.3?
