JoanB,

I looked for 'DrioBox' but didn't see anything, did you mean DropBox? If so, yes.....but as you say, (basically) it's not a file manager.

Thanks for the thought.

Chris,

Ok. so for now I'll stick with Documents 5, maybe I just need to use it more to get comfortable with what it can do. As for 'Evernote'....I'll have to take a look at it later today, thanks for the tip.

Re: [iPad] Re: Attachments "Saved to Drive"

Yes, there is an app for Google Drive. Judging from the option showing, I take it for installed on your iPad.

So find that app, then open it.  :-)

I just checked mine. It contains most items in the root folder, but Microsoft Outlook appears to have created a folder to store its own mail attachments.

I happen to have a photo there. Clicking the associated three vertical dots, I get options that include "Available offline" (with a pin). That option was grey when I pressed that, it now is black, but I don't see it in Photos. So it may reside in some folder associated with the Google Drive app on my iPad.

There are more options...  :-)

Thanks, Chris for your reply. Yes, it does show a triangular icon. So, it goes to Google drive? And how can I find Google Drive? Is it an app?

I know this doesn't completely answer your question, but I keep all my user manuals in Driobox. That way, no matter which computer/device I have, they are always available.

Re: [iPad] Attachments "Saved to Drive"

The options you have are determined by the mail client you use, the other apps installed, and then limited to the options that you have enabled.
The icon shown may hold the clue, like the triangular shape for Google Drive.
There may be an option to the folder on that drive, it may also be fixed for this mail client or for the type of file to be saved, like "Photos".

These options are shown in the menus related to the Exit or ... (three dots) buttons that may be present, or when you long-press on an item. These options can be set using the last (rightmost) entry of yet again three dots.

(To check, I found a message that came with a Word document. Pressing its icon showed these two menus plus the opportunity to AirDrop it to other Apple devices. I also noted that not every message listed with a paperclip showed an icon of an attachment to be saved.)

I'd call the matter "minimalistic" rather than "intuitive".

Hope this helps, anyway.  :-)

I just got an email with a photo as an attachment. I would like it to go into Photos, but it is not there. I clicked on "Save to Drive" but I can't find it. Where did it go?

When I view a message in Mail on the iPad, I can tap on it to bring up a sheet offering several options. One of them is "Save".

I do not see "Save to Drive".

If I tap on "Save", the image is saved to my camera roll in Photos.

Re: [iPad] Re: IOS File Manager

Yes, Tom, Cloud Commander is targeted at cloud users, therefore it "requires" cloud storage.  :-)

As your use seems to resemble mine, Documents 5 would be at least "a" choice. It can exchange files (even folders) with the cloud. It has file viewers built in, but it can also copy them to other apps. (Be sure to configure your Exit and Actions menus (I mean those with the Exit symbol and with the three dots) properly by dragging the options into their desired order and by adding or blocking the options to be included.)

For snippets of information you may consider using Evernote (or equivalent). I cherish my Evernote Premium subscription, and I have two notebooks configured as available off-line.

Chris,

Just finished looking at Cloud Commander. It also looks good, however it looks like a program requiring storage of my files on a remote 'server' in order to manipulate them and that's not what I'm looking for, as you said in your original reply :)

I think I'll wait for the 9.3 Jailbreak and hope it will apply to my Mini 1, that looks like my best bet.

ps; I'm not a game player, movie watcher, or app experimenter, I just like to download and save manuals and technical materials, then later when not in access of WiFi, pull them up and read or save portions of them for later use..... pretty simple stuff, so maybe it's just a matter of finding the proper program and learning how to use it.  It seems to me that Jailbreak is what I'm looking for........something like 'Finder' in my MacBookPro.

 Thanks for the reply.

Jailbreak?
Why bother.
No need.

iBooks
PDFPen
GoodReader
and dozens of others.

Re: [iPad] Re: IOS File Manager

In my limited experience, I like this.

On Sat, Jan 30, 2016 at 7:13 AM, Chris Laarman chrislaarman@yahoo.com [iPad] <iPad@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

I guess that many people want a "proper" file manager for iOS.
However, the design of iOS itself may be to blame by nesting data folders inside app folders (or at least giving that impression).
So moving data files to the cloud may be a greater relief to iOS users than to others.

Me, I have more or less settled on Documents 5, but then especially of copying meeting documents to my iPad for off-line use, annotating them, and having several of them open at once in tabs.
Settling on Documents 5 means that I may have been unaware of progress in other file managers, of which I have collected quite a lot.

Being a dedicated user of Total Commander on Windows systems, I was delighted to find a two-pane file manager for iOS named Cloud Commander. It does need time to get used to, and it doesn't provide the freedom to access local files except the Photos folder and a My Documents folder that seems limited to that very app.
(Cloud Commander also has an OS X edition.)

Hope this helps.

I own an iPad mini, an old mini 1 with iOS 9.2, which was given to me as a gift.  I'm also looking for a file management app but haven't had much success. I also own a Nexus 7, which I rooted, and find that managing files is much, much easier. Admittedly, I'm going thru a learning curve with the 'mini' but all of the suggestions on this thread concern the use of an outside source for file manipulation. I have downloaded the free "FileManager" app and have yet to figure out how to move a simple txt file OUT of the program without going through some kind of outside server. Am I missing something here?

I then went to the "Document 5" app and it looks a little better but still nothing like my Nexus as far as file manipulation is concerned. Now I'd like to move all my files, and a few photos, out of 'File Manager' and over to 'Document 5'.......how can I do that without going through a server, which means the "mini" has to be connected to a network......or is there a better file manager out there which does not require the use of a network to move data around?

BTY, I don't want to come across as not liking Apple products since I own a MacBook Pro and an iMAC and do not have these problems.

Thanks for any help along these lines.
