Here's a plug for just doing without.  Life is too precious and short to waste it watching puppet shows.  Give a tenth of the thousands of dollars you'll save to a food pantry or a homeless shelter.

Rights.

Imagine if all the cable networks, or for that matter any network, all had the same content. So they differentiate themselves by having content that is exclusive. The pity is I may like 4 series, and all four may be on a different provider, so I now pay for four providers. Fragmentation.

I have a feeling the cable companies block networks from offering their content independently.  If networks were available independently who would choose to pay for the blocks of hundreds that cable companies bundle and charge up the nose for?  I'd bet most people only view a few.  The rest are useless.  But we are stuck with paying for them anyway.

There has to be a happy medium. After getting an Apple TV and finding I watched mainly the different TV apps, like AMC etc rather than cable, I figured I was paying too much and shut off cable.  As it stands now cord cutters don't have a lot of options. We'd like to be able g to choose the networks we want, download their apps and watch. Even if that charge a bit. $6 a month for the CBS app, $10 with no commercials. That's fine for me. I don't know why other networks can't do the same.

Most places have 1-2 cable providers and 1-2 satyellite providers to choose from. They seem to sell expensive packages $50+ channels a month wth no premiums (I'm guessing. I hasn't had tv since like 09 or 07)

2. Our one cable provider is Sky, which is via satellite. Everyone loves to hate Sky as they have this misconception it has a monopoly. Sky Basic includes FTA, the Natgeo, History etc channels. CNN, Fox, BBC News, Kids channels, Living Channel Food channel etc etc.About $47 a month. To get Sport thats $26 more. To get Movies thats $26 more. HD is $10 more. Rent the recorder thats $20 more. The bugbear is many don't want Sky at $100 a month just to watch sport. It has all the key sports and many smaller sports. 4 sport channels, with 2 to 7 popups as needed. 2 x ESPN Its great for sport. When I had Sky with sport it was $100 per month.

Re: [iPad] Re: Apple TV question

People in NZ want that too. As per my just posted post, they want to have some of our one cable providers content and not the rest. The issue with that is that it will save you money. For you, thats a good thing, but for the cable company, its lost revenue. The cost if the rights covers all content. The cost that consumers pay is for all the content, even though you dont want it all. But in the overall mix, they make a profit. if revenues drop, they have to drop content. Then people will revolt. Effectively, everyone subsidises everyone.. What I ma saying is that your cable company past CBS a fee, but if that fee was people like you at $10 per month I suggest it will be way less. There is a LOT of content out there, and the vast majority of it is cheap as chips. The new content and the CBS if you like is not cheap. But when a service has a gazillion programs, it seems like a good deal, which it is. But these new and desired contents are very expensive, subsidised by all of their subscribers
