There was only one earlier iPod Touch -- the original model.
The original poster referred to "an older iPod Touch. It says model MC086LL".
That is the model referred to in the Mactracker citation.

>>> There never was an 4.3 update for my iPod which is the same exact one. There was, however, an iOS 5 update. I don't know if there ever was a 4.3 update but if there was then it didn't apply to iPods.

>> I have never owned an iPod Touch. My information came from Mactracker, which states that *this* iPod Touch:
>>> OVERVIEW
>>> Introduced September 2008
>>> Model Identifier iPod2,1
>>> Order Number MC086LL/A (8 GB)
>>
>> Can use *this* iOS:
>>> SOFTWARE
>>> Original OS iOS 2.1.1 (5F138)
>>> Maximum OS iOS 4.2.1 (8C148)
