Re: [iPad] back to speakers

Unfortunately, not. I've got a low cost portable radio that has a connector for my iPod Touch. It works well when I'm working outside or in the basement in the wood shop or on the model train layout. But, when I'm wanting to listen to music, I use the airport express connected to a Sony receiver,

JB Lansing has always been a good brand of speaker system, but I've no idea whether or not they're still around, let alone whether or not they make self amplified systems. Ditto for Electrovoice or University speakers, which I bought over thirty years ago. Loops, now I'm dating myself.

Re: [iPad] transfering DVD's

not sure but try a setting other than ipad cuz ipad optimizes it for an ipad not a 90" HDTV. an ipad is much smaller than a larger HDTV.

I just did a gazillion movies flawlessly using directions from this group
download and install Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/details.php
Put you DVD in your computer
open Handbrake
go to tools/options and pick the location you want your finished project to be under output files
pick Source/name of DVD (should be bottom option)
make sure "ipad" is selected as preset on the right side
hit Start
when finished
plug ipad in to computer
open itunes go to your device on the left
pick movies on the right
file/add file to library
find the movie you just created...make sure it it checked, then synch..sounds a lot harder than it really is

[iPad] Re: Re wifi and 3g

>>>Hi I am going to a conference next week and they will not have free wi fi so have bought a 3gb sim valid for 30 days. When I have access to free wifi can you turn off the sim card so you are only using the free stuff? And then turn it on when no free wi fi about? For example have wi fi at home and dont want to be using the pay as you go plan? THanks for the help. Am in Australia by the way. Chris

The iPad automatically searches for wifi first.
Just don't disable wifi. Settings > Wifi > Set the slider to the blue position.
Also, on this same page, put the bottom slider, Ask to join Networks, to the blue position
Note what it says on that page, this is exactly what will happen.

The iPad automatically searches for wifi first. If it sees a known wifi network, it connects. If it sees an unknown wifi network, it asks you to connect manually, which usually involves entering a password.
It will only go to 3G if it can't connect to any wifi network.

Recently, I went on a trip with the iPad2. In 7 days, I made intensive use of the 3G: I used Maps for hours, and several apps that depend on 3G. I used up about 200 MB.

If you haven't done so already, I recommend doing a trial run with the SIM card. Insert it, make sure it works. Go some place where you know you have no wifi access and launch Safari, and do a Google search for something that you couldn't possibly have seen before, so as to make sure you don't have that page in some cache.

Some Access providers may refuse sending email that does not come through your home network. Try sending a message while using 3G. If this is your case, you will get an error message. You might find it convenient then to open a Gmail account (I'm sure there are other services that could work, Gmail is the one I know about and use). Then, when you write a message, you only have to make sure you use your gmail account. You do that by tapping the Cc/Bcc, From line, which will invoke a menu where you choose your gmail account instead of your usual account.

If you want to make sure you don't use 3G by mistake, you can turn it off.
Settings > Cellular Data, put the blue slider at the top to the grey position. Don't forget to turn it back to blue when you want to be able to go 3G. Otherwise, you will worry that your SIM card or iPad are on the blink.

If you want to economize, turn off Notifications and Location Service, in Settings. Personally, I ended up keeping Location Services on, because I was always on the go and most always needed it to be enabled, and ready to use. YMMV.

You can check your data usage.
Settings > General > Usage.

That's it, I think.

Am in Québec, by the way. Will vote on Monday.

Yes. To turn off GSM, go to setting and switch on the airplane mode.

Awesome advise, thanks. I just want to hear sound that does not sound like it is coming from inside a cardboard box or all fuzzy/scratchy. Do you have brand and type to recommend? We currently don't have a good audio system (not home long enough to enjoy such a thing)

If So, then you'll want to buy a good pair of AMPLIFIED speakers. These may be powered by batteries, just like your iPad, or may be powered by the electric mains, or have the option of being powered from either source.
>
> Look for a brand with a wide frequency response. This is what provides superior sound; it usually equates to larger full range speakers or several limited range speakers (tweeter, mid-range, woofer, subwoofer) in the system. Don't expect too much sound quality from the twenty dollar a pair type of speakers that the big box stores sell - although you'll get volume. Conversely, don't think that paying lots of bucks will necessarily equate to a better product.
>
> The most misleading specification is the power rating of the system. "Peak Music Power" or some variant is often used. This is a high number and represents an output level that cannot be sustained for any reasonable time. Also, many power outputs are specified at 10% distortion levels which your ears would probably not appreciate. If possible, look for RMS power at a distortion of 1% or preferably 0.1%.

[iPad] iSailGPS 1.0 for the iPad

iSailGPS converts your iOS device into a high-performance GPS receiver for USA NOAA nautical charts.

Easy to use with must-have features:

Forever-free access to all USA NOAA Raster Nautical Charts, downloaded over WiFi or cell service to your iOS device. Charts from our server have a shorter download time, use less of your monthly data allotment and take up less memory on your iOS device.

Use your stored Charts even when you have no cell service available.

Switches between downloaded charts as you sail. Make wise navigation decisions on the water by choosing detailed or overview charts.

Enjoy the full resolution and what's-all-around detail of the NOAA Raster Nautical Charts (RNC). They are a welcomed advantage over ENC Vector Charts, which only show a coastline, contour line, and pinpoint of where you are.

Records a track on the chart and shows a speed graph of your trip. Choose to record a track in the background even when the iOS device is asleep or when using another App.

Mark waypoints with a convenient button on the main chart screen, or import them using email or iTunes File Sharing.

Set a "Go To" waypoint and see the course, heading, bearing, direction, distance, and estimated time of arrival.

Export a GPX file of your tracks, waypoints, or current position to a friend or your home computer via email or iTunes.

Cruise over to our new website
