According to Apple, the 3rd-gen iPod touch came in 32 and 64GB models, and can run iOS 5.1.1
And the 2nd-gen touch came in 8, 16, and 32 GB models.
And different websites assign the MC086LL identification to 3rd-gen and others to 2nd-gen, it seems to be assigned to the 8GB model (which was 2nd-gen, according to Apple).
Mactracker agrees that 3rd-gen can run 5.1.1, but claims 2nd-gen cannot.
So, Pete, what ID information does yours have in Settings -- General -- About for "Capacity", "Version", and Model" ?
It's possible Mactracker is wrong, but it would be the first time I will have caught it in an error in many years.
