I finally found a white noise app that would load. Just kept trying to load all the free ones. Never could find a way to tell it to check for iOS updates.

I can't find the place to even ask it to check for an update. When I go to settings there is nothing like that there.

What happens when you check for iOS upgrades? I have the same exact iPod and it can be upgraded to iOS 5. I never did the upgrade because my favorite WiFi seeking (wardriving) app isn't supported by iOS 5 and I use the app a lot when traveling.
There are other white noise apps so try those instead.
