Jim,
I have an 8GB iPod. Everything else is the same as the original poster. When I got the notice that iOS 5 was ready to install I unplugged the iPod. My wardriving app is no longer supported by Apple and it won't work with iOS 5. My son had the same app and it was no longer functional with iOS 5 so I decided not to upgrade.
It's the best wardriving tool on the planet and I want to keep it.
The thing is that iTunes would not have told me it was ready to install iOS 5 if it wasn't ready to do so.
Pete
