Maybe not THIS week.
The price of beautiful young mountains is having an active tectonic plate boundary. And ongoing earthquakes (millions of years worth).
Google Earth shows fascinating aspects of New Zealand, which is literally ON a plate boundary, even more so than is Japan -- the ocean plate boundary/subduction zone crosses the coast just 80 miles from Christchurch, traverses halfway across South Island, and *becomes* the Southern Alps.
And i would really like to learn more about the geology of that thumb-like peninsula just south of you....
