Yes. The fault "Alpine Fault" goes up to Wellington just to the east and out to sea. 

Banks Peninsula is the thumb area it had two volcanos which are where Lyttelton Harbour and Akaroa harbour are now. The former is where the big 6.3 was centered and  shallow at 6km deep. The cause of damage was that a typical ground acceleration of a large quake is around 0.9g but this was 2.2g. The S waves reflected off the port hills (3km from here and between Christchurch and lyttelton ) the rock is volcanic so the shock waves bounced off them and into our city.

TV had a drive through of our Cbd which demotion is almost over, comparing it to google maps which still shows the pre quake city. It was on Campbell Live so TV3 should have it on demand, I will check

Maybe not THIS week.
The price of beautiful young mountains is having an active tectonic plate boundary. And ongoing earthquakes (millions of years worth).

Google Earth shows fascinating aspects of New Zealand, which is literally ON a plate boundary, even more so than is Japan -- the ocean plate boundary/subduction zone crosses the coast just 80 miles from Christchurch, traverses halfway across South Island, and *becomes* the Southern Alps.

And i would really like to learn more about the geology of that thumb-like peninsula just south of you....
