No iPhone or iPad, natively, actually has a lens capable of zooming.

What is referred to as "zooming" is better described as "digital" zoom, to distinguish it from "optical", or true zoom.

The digital process used is better described as "crop and enlarge" -- and it will always, ALWAYS degrade image quality.

If you take the shot without "zooming" then crop later, then on the one hand, you can crop more precisely, and second, the image quality will be no worse, and possibly not as bad.

If you can tap on the center of interest, the exposure and focus will still be for that point.
