Oops! I didn't realize that some of my apps have grown since installed and are much larger. My music uses 2.6 GB's and I have 6 other apps using more than 100 MB's.
Sorry about the misinformation, I looked in the wrong place. My old 8 GB iPod Touch still has 2.9 GB's of free space.
