I have a 16GB iPad mini, and I keep no music on it and very few photos. Also, I don't put most of my apps on it, just those that I use most. It's about half full now and that works fine for me. My iPad 3 is 32 GB. When I eventually update to a newer one, I will go for the 64, which is what I have on my iPhone 5, and that's where all my music resides.
