Rob and I went to San Francisco yesterday to take in Macworld/iWorld. What a fun day. We took in the Expo and some Tech Talks. Couldn't go without learning something LOL!
We left at 5:30a for the hour and a half drive to Berkeley, CA where we got on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) for the trip into San Francisco. We don't normally drive in because of bridge toll and expensive parking.
After we checked in at Moscone Center West, we went to the second floor to the Main Stage where we saw the hour presentation Playing Steve and Woz at 9a. Ashton Kutcher and Josh Gad were there for the interview about their movie about Steve Job.
At 10a we on the Main Stage, we stayed for Chris Breen (Mac 911) and his lecture on Making More of Mountain Lion. We learned about the history of the OS starting from OS 9 up to Mountain Lion. Then he showed us some tricks with Finder, Animator and some keyboard shortcuts.
We weren't really interested in the Tech Talks between 10:45a and 1p, so we left Moscone West and walked down to Mel's Diner for breakfast. We both had egs over medium, bacon, country potatoes, toast and coffee. Eating at Moscone West is always expensive, so we don't eat there.
When we were done, we walked back and spent about an hour in the Expo looking at vender products. Lots of iPhone and iPad cases. Nothing really new or innovative.
At 1p We went to the Tech Talk iCloud, App Stores and Other Things to Fear: Has Apple Forgotten the Power User. One of the panelists was Rene Ritchie (iMore Blog). The panelists talked about Apple and how Apple has changed over the years to make things easier for the novice user. They also talked about iCloud and iOS and how we don't have the use of the file structure that long time computer users are use to messing around with. It all comes down to saving a file or document and having it show up on all our devices. It's just there. No more drilling down through folders to find it.
2p I went to the Tech Talk on iPad Art Innovation, The Next Step! It was all about creating paintings on the iPad. The speaker was Sumit Vishwakarma from http://sumitstudio.com/ He is a good artist. He talked about painting on the iPad and showed some neat apps to accomplish that. His big thing was showing how painting on the iPad can produce paintings that look like they were really painted. The app I downloaded and really like that he showed off was Meritum Paint Pro. Here's the link to Meritum Paint (free). The Pro version is $1.99
Rob went to Getting Cozy with Siri. He said it was a fun Tech Talk with TidBits Senior Editor, Joe Kissell. You can now open apps, post to Twitter and FB and even get sports score just by using Siri.
Afterwards, I stayed for Hardening Your IPhone from Stalkers: What EVERYONE Should Know. It was pretty interesting. My take on it was that if you turned off all the fun stuff on your iPhone, like Find Friends and GPS, why have a smartphone of any kind. Also, turning off all those types of features on FB and Twitter makes them less useful too, in my opinion. I would never have heated and informative political discussions from just my friends. It takes public posts, IMHO, to get good discussions going on FB and Twitter. Just be careful.
Rob went to the Tech Talk Answer, Please: an Apple Trivia Extravaganza, with Glitz, Glamour and Great Prizes. It wasn't what he expected. Last year it was a trivia game with panelists that answered questions and got the audience to side with the different panelists choosing which panelist had the right answer. This time it was handing out clipboards, reading off questions and writing down your answers on the clipboard and turning them in. Rob left early and went to the Macworld Live stage and got in on the last of a talk that included Veronica Belmont, co-host of Revision3's Tekzilla. Rob thinks she's gorgeous. She is and even better looking in person than on her video podcast.
When I was done, I met Rob and we finished looking around the Expo. We bought our obligatory Macworld t-shirts and I bought a Macworld painters hat. Then we walked back to the BART station and went home. A full day of learning and fun. It's something we like to do every year since 2007 when the first iPhone came out. This was the first year we registered for Tech Talks. Very glad we did. Usually we go for the Expo only. If it weren't for the Tech Talks this year, we would have been home much earlier. We were very disappointed in the Expo this year.
