If you end up in court and you win, that is that. You have escaped punishment for another day. Perhaps you can convince others that what you did was considered "fair use" and reasonable. If so, case essentially closed until the next time.

I put Fair Use in quotes because so many people do not understand that term; a very specific term found in the copyright law. The copyright law narrowly and specifically defines what Fair Use means.

If the court decides you violated the law, then that is where your problems really start. The fines can be huge. Or the IP owner(s) can take pity and not pursue collection.

I think as more and more people live their lives on the web and products like iPads and smart phones become increasingly a vital part of our day to day, there will be more suits. There is only so much great content to go around and owners are trying to find a way to monetize their property.
