But the terms of service often include phrases such as "CorporationX
retains the right to change these terms of service without prior
notification . . ." so people don't know what the corporation will do,
even if they read the fine print.

Apple says the same things about what it can do -- will you stop using
Apple devices because it could issue an upgrade that changes how your
device works and won't allow a downgrade back to the previous version of
the OS?

Telling people to read the T.O.S. document, even if it could actually be
understood, means nothing when all computer companies include a phrase
which gives them carte-blanche to do whatever they want with no
permission from the end user. So even though you might like the initial
T.O.S. they can change and you don't find out until you hear about it in
the news or your device stops doing something you used to be able to do.
