Some web sites can be awfully sneaky about getting your "permission"
  and tricking you into things.

Look at how FB changes privacy-related features on the QT, and how many
*Download here!* buttons make you think you're d/l the item you wanted only
to find out you've installed another unwanted toolbar.

You may have clicked something you weren't even aware of, or it was included
subtly in something you did intend to get. Or, of course, fumble-fingered at
  just the wrong time.

Company Needs Consumer Permission to Track Online Movements
  By: John Eggerton Oct 23 2012 - 09:24am

Web tracker Compete Inc. has settled with the Federal Trade Commission over
charges that it broke the law by tracking online users, collecting their
personal data, and not disclosing how much it was collecting or honoring its
  promises to protect the data.

The company, which sold the data to clients trying to boost Web traffic and
sales, has agreed to obtain consumers' express consent before collecting any
data from software downloaded onto their computers.
