if I remember correctly the OP mentioned using photoshop. Which started me in that direction.
By the way. On a mac the psd is viewable in the preview app I believe. At least I seem to remember that anyway.
Does windows handle png files correctly now? I know windows internet explorer used to have issues with transparent png files.

The tradeoff with lossless compression is time versus space. Particularly important if you have an upper-tier DSLR which offers the choice, but have smaller SD cards to put in it.
As for PSD, it's a good format, IFF you're using Photoshop products, and IFF you have no objection to *proprietary* formats.
