I think the original poster is right in thinking that jpg is the format that most of her family will have the ability to use. And I would research whether Graphic Converter might be worth a purchase for its batch conversion ability.

Don't hold that against the Windows world in general -- I've never had a
problem with png files, but then I use IE as little as I need to and
then only for web-sites developed by people who couldn't be bothered
checking their work in more than one browser and fixing the code so that
it works in more than just IE.
