So what is a song worth, anyway? I wont get into what "reasonable quality" means. Rap music is not reasonable quality to many people such as myself, but it is to fans of the genre. And Gaetano Donizetti is likely not worth much to some rappers or CM fans or others that do not like Opera and classical music, but it is likely interesting to some. I do not want to say all rappers or country fans do not like opera.
I do not have a right to judge quality for you, just for me, so whatever reasonable means is tough and it must not be considered much because we all know what sucks and what rules, as far as personal taste is concerned.
I like Gregorian Chants and I adore Italian Baroque masters and Caravaggio. Not to mention, the Celtic Women and true masters like Earl Scruggs, Phil Spector's Wall of Sound efforts, and Malmsteen; a shredder many old farts do not like one darn bit. Some people despise banjo music and electric anything and they likely think the music has no value. Segovia despised the electric guitar, so to him, Clapton and the aforementioned Malmsteen are worth zero.
Not sure that someone other than the artists, producers, copyright owners, labels, etc., should decide what is reasonable and what a song is worth. I think it is fair for the industry to dictate terms, certainly no shortage of ways artists can distribute their hard effort.
We have far more access to music today than we did back in 1966 when I was in "The Music Man." And anyone can create music and find an audiance. What I can't find locally, I can buy on-line. I just bought a few rare recordings that were simply not locally available and the Internet makes it effortless to find new music.
It also makes piracy easy and that is the big issue. Artists want control and protection and many in the public do not; they think it must be free or .99 cents. Someone must decide and ther emust be protection from those that damage things.
