True. 6 km to sea probably 100km to snow on the southern alps. We are temperate , north island is sub tropical, more humidity and they are getting tornados and heavy rain at times .Not like tornado alley tho .  The earthquakes were bad but the aftershocks that we feel are rare now the last wee shake I felt was days ago. They are close and shallow but hopefully all past now.  I've been to the US a number of times I like it. But down under here we don't have major weather issues so

But you got that damn earthquake. You're also close to the mountains so you can always drive to enjoy the snow. I think I would prefer the north end of the north island and take the ferry to see snow on the South Island.
