One usually needs to learn some things "the hard way". Having an auto accident, for example, probably makes most kids much better drivers. I've thot that one reason older people sometimes seem to have a hard time with all the little electronic devices is that they're so afraid of having to "learn the hard way" - make mistakes - that they're effectively unable to learn at all.
Kids don't care, but adults are inhibited by their self-respect, their fear of losing face.

Isn't that the truth, Judith!! Actually, he has been cutting potatoes for years, even learned how to cut them properly during his army stints, but for some reason he seems to have to cut a finger every once in a while! :-D
