I agree that waste is a big problem. However, no functioning iPad needs to enter the waste stream now. There are many institutions which would welcome a donation of an "old" iPad -- schools, shelters, prisons, church groups, etc. -- and put it to use for years to come.

You could always sell it + cases so it's reused. Or give it to someone who might not be able to buy one. I hear ya about waste.
