Thanks, that was it. I must have hit that when I was messing around trying to get my sound to work on the Audubon Birds app, which by the way was just a loose nut on the controls. (I actually had the mute slider on, I thought when it had a red dot it was on but that means it is off. Apparently some apps will still make sound with it muted so I thought it was not muted but not the birds app.

(That's under Settings.)Whichever the side button is not controlling is accessed by double clicking on the Home button and dragging your finger from left to right on the bottom portion of the screen. Somehow I have locked rotation on my iPad 3. I have the little button on the side set to mute, not lock rotation , plus changing it doesn't help. Anyone tell me how to change it back?
