Hmmm. Double press the home button and see the icons at the bottom of the screen? Swipe those to the right and there should be an iPod (music) control, Volume and a button icon on the extreme left.
Depending on your choices in Settings, touching that button will lock/unlock the iPad orientation.

(That's under Settings.)Whichever the side button is not controlling is accessed by double clicking on the Home button and dragging your finger from left to right on the bottom portion of the screen. You'll either see a lock/unlock button or sound/mute button on the bottom left side of the screen.
