While I haven't tried this, I did read this link and it says that this method only works for pictures taken with the device's camera.
I find it interesting that the only pictures that show on "Camera Roll" on my iPad 3 are the ones taken with the iPad or saved from an email. The folders that I imported with iTunes do NOT appear in Camera Roll. Perhaps it is different in the 1 or 2.

I just searched for this topic and quickly found this:

The article has a Mac section, which I tried, and indeed the Camera Connection Kit images on my iPad are shown and can be imported to my Mac.

There are also sections for Windows XP and Windows 7/Vista. I can't check these out because I completely abjure Windows, but perhaps you will find the same as I found for the Mac.
