Still have the 8088; it is stored with the Curta and the Marchant calculators. I do not use them these days. So no, not new. Been in the business for many years building some of the most wildly popular consumer electronics products ever sold and these days, I write for manufacturers that offer wildly popular consumer electronics. So no, definitely not a virgin.
I'll tell you why it is Apple's problem. Yes, they have AirPrint. But they sell the iPad as the be all end all for portability, all the while selling it as a great tool for business, writers, artists, etc.
They made the iPad incomparable with the vast majority of printers on the market. Only those with AirPrint and only 12 models at the time. It is a shame that you can't seem to understand why so many people are a little upset.
And yes, writing a printer driver is a non-issue. Apple decided for whatever reason, to not make printing universal.
When you consider that Adobe cannot offer Flash due to Apple's restrictions, the reason other manufacturers do not offer drivers/software to enable WiFi printing might be due to a similar restriction imposed by Apple. Neither you nor I know what Apple requires or the terms of those contracts.
Sorry, but when Apple restricted printing, they upset many people that logically assumed they could print.

Many but not all printer manufacturers have almost always made wonderful printer drivers for select few of it's products, usually pricier ones, and none for the rest. I think in PC land there are crappy drivers for every printer under the sun right? Some are hand coded? Yea. Printer manufactures treat apple as a red headed step child. Sorry. Bitch at the manufacturer. Apple has AirPrint and it works beautifully when supported and some manufacturers support it on some models. Why not all models? Why is that Apple's problem? I'll eagerly await your response.
