Bring the 'cut-out' up to the 2 holes in the back of the case where your iPad is...On the left sideof this shot:
Then, click that so it is fastened into those two holes.
With the iPad part of the case, Pull it up high
Be sure the typing angle peg is NOT engaged into it's hole at the other side.
This typing peg engagement would be what you DO NOT want right now. ^^^^
And the iPad casing is lifted up for your Popcorn viewing. :-)
If the iPad part doesn't lift, you may need to contact JOBY support. It IS a 'stiff' hinge, but should work..
