I think you're right. The big change I noticed was that with the release of iOS 8, third party apps can talk to Apple apps. That's a biggie. I like the way Apple is doing it too. Each third party app api must go through a security check to get to the app it wants to talk to. That's the whole thing about extensions. One example used was being able to use the app Waterlogue with the native camera photo editor on iPhone/iPad. Do you think Jobs would have allowed that? I don't. Not even with the security check being put in place.
