Make sure you've selected "Device" instead of "Cloud" at the bottom of
the library listing -- the only way to remove books from "Cloud" is to
permanently delete them from your Amazon account, which is something you
should never do unless you are positive you will never ever want to read
those books again. Because once they are deleted from your Amazon
account, the only way to get them back is to re-purchase them.

But if you make sure you've selected "Device" in your Library view, you
can remove the books, which archives them for that device and you can
get them back to read again later if you wish, from "Manage My Kindle"
under "My Account" at amazon.com.
