It's called the Favorites Bar (that's where the web-sites you have most
frequently visited appear to make it easier for you to re-visit them
since Safari thinks they're your favorite URLs).

Open the Settings app, then scroll down the left list until you see
Safari and tap on that to open the settings for Safari.

In the top of the settings dialog, in the General section is a setting
labeled Show Favorites Bar -- turn that off (tap it and the green with
the 1 in it should turn to white with a 0 in it as the slider moves to
the left).

Next time you open Safari that bar will be gone.
