Run the kindle app on your iPad. At the bottom there are two tabs, one has just the books on your iPad and the other marked Cloud has all the kindle books you own. You can delete a book from your device (iPad kindle app) but it's still on the Cloud. You can download it again whenever you want. I have a zillion cookbooks on the cloud (my total amazon kindle library) and I download the book I am going to use to make something, then delete it from my iPad when I'm done.
