I don't know about a Mac but on a PC (Windows) it has to be installed.

Isn't i loud already on a Mac? I usually back up my iPhone and iPads via the Cloud and just assumed it was on the Mac.

It's backed up in iTunes. You can also install iCloud on your computer if you want.
