Alice,     As one who has spent a career in communications technology ( the radio kind )  I can attest that due to the physical nature of the micro-chip implanted in pets,  it would be extremely difficult to implement any sort of effective tracking of those devices.  The range is simply too short ( as Jim Saklad recently pointed out already ).    RFID tags as used in commercial industry for product tracking is another matter;  those chips are not practical for implanting in animals… but I believe altering such for those purposes may well be just around the corner.

I said "can" not "does".  Thing is, we don't know if the "standard" chips do or not. Do we believe everything we're told about them? Do we look towards the future and think of potential uses for technology? Why not microchips?
