I got the original Kindle because it would be easier to read since I could
pump up the front size. That worked really well for me. It's nice too that
there is an audio version you can use, electronic but audible. What didn't
work for me was no backlight. I'm not in outside bright light and much
prefer the backlight of the iPads.

You can pump up the font size on the iPad too. I use different sizes under
different conditions.
OTOH the Real Kindle may have audio-enabled for some books that don't have
it on the iPad.
And there are books you can "rent" for free if you have a Real Kindle.
I think there are also borrow & lending options but I dont' have a RK so
don't really know about that.
I couldn't do without the backlight on my iPad! I'm already using it often
in an inadequately lighted (for reading) area, so I wouldn't choose
something with the same lighting needs as a DTB. :-)
