Re: [iPad] Podcast Downloads and iTunes

I'm not sure but I think I can help. I rip audiobooks to iTunes all the time. After the cd shows up in iTunes, hold down the Control key and the A to select all the tracks. Then click on Advanced at the top of the iTunes screen and Join Tracks. This puts all the tracks in the disk into one long track. Then Click on Advanced again and Submit Track Names. A new dialog box appears and fill in the information for Artist, Album and Genre. Be sure to list the correct Genre. If you use Books, the files will stay at the top of the music section. Be sure to number each disk under Album with the correct number. That keeps the disks in the correct order. Use 01, 02, etc. because if you have more than 9 disks, number 10 will go to the top of the list if you just use 9 instead of 09. I use 01, 02, etc. even if there are less than 9 disks because it is just a habit by now.

Once all the disks are ripped to iTunes, select all files in one audiobook and click on Get Info, then on Options. Here you can change the Genre to Audiobooks (under Media Kind) and the book will go from the music file into the books file in your iTunes library. (I leave them at the top of the music file so everything is in the same place.) Click Yes for Part of a compilation, Remember position, and Skip when shuffling. I leave Equalizer preset to None but you can fool with it if you want to. You can also set the volume here.

At first this sounds very complicated and time consuming but after a while it becomes easy and is no big deal. If you forget to join tracks, you will have a bunch of small files on that disk but they will stay in the proper order because you named the disk with a number. I haven't found a way to undo this.

HTH.

Subject: Re: [iPad] Podcast Downloads and iTunes

I've been trying to get better at some iTunes (for lack of a better
term) functions. Am getting the handle on how best to load audiobooks
from CDs to iTunes for transfer to iDevices for listening. Many CD
audiobooks have a million little files and getting them to load to
iTunes, transfer to the iDevice and then play back in proper order was a
mess. I'd see a million little files, some a few seconds long with names
that made no sense. But have recently found some online instruction that
works well for getting the little files formed into one file per disk
and then giving other instructions to iTunes to play in the proper disk
order. Confusing to explain unless you have seen the mess.

The new Podcast app got me thinking and working on the similar issue
related to some podcasts. I don't have an issue with the podcasts gotten
through iTunes. Have subscriptions to some episode type audiobooks and
other podcasts like old time radio show. They download to iTunes in and
orderly manner and I'll put on the iDevice or remove as needed. There
maybe a better way to do, as you mention streaming, but this is my
current method.

But I sometimes find episode or chapter type audiobooks or other
podcasts elsewhere on the internet and they come into iTunes as Music
files. Currently make playlists for them and then when needed copy to
iDevice. But they play like music and the chapters may be out of order
due to some funny sorting. Like the CD audiobooks I'm learning to use
iTunes to modify the file info to group the files together and play in
the proper order with the ability to stop at a certain spot and start
back up at that spot next time. If iTunes or the idevice sees the files
as just music it will start the file again at the beginning, like a
regular song. The biggest problem is which of the tiny files did you
stop at, it's all gibberish.

If someone has played with this issue and found the solution they can
help me. To the other readers it is mush.

At this point don't have a clear solution to the situation, but your
comment on streaming podcasts from iTunes could save space on an iPad/Phone.
Thanks
