I would try it what do you have to lose? I was listening to the pod cast ipad today and they mentiond two cases where they took pity on the customer and did do a replacement! Good luck my heart goes out to you!

That employee should have been fired. It doesn't matter if the action that caused the damage was stupid, he should have simply said the warranty doesn't cover that damage here are your options for repair or replacement.
