My preference is MDRP (MacDVDRipperPro) it is a paid program but has
many preferred features for me and is only $10.
You can then use Handbreak or any of the other compressors to reduce
the size for the iPad/iPhone.
I say it's preferred because I keep an external drive for all my DVDs
complete with previews and extras and can watch any DVD without
looking for the box I stashed it in.

But to be legal remember that you must own the DVD to have it on your
computer/iPad/iPhone, if you rip it then sell or give away the DVD you
must delete the copy on your computer.
