i did one on a car break in, just a  few hundred bucks, and my rates never changed, but its the only thing i have ever used my homeowners insurance for.

I was told by one company that they would rather have someone with really large claims rather than many small claims.  I didn't know that and was a red flag to my previous company. As soon as I accidentally let the insurance lapse, they dropped me like a hot potato. I was then out of insurance and no one wanted to take me on except one high-risk, super-expensive insurance company! Lesson learned!!
