i did one on a car break in, just a few hundred bucks, and my rates never changed, but its the only thing i have ever used my homeowners insurance for.

From my experience with homeowner's insurance, this is not the time to do it. I was told by one company that they would rather have someone with really large claims rather than many small claims. I didn't know that and was a red flag to my previous company. As soon as I accidentally let the insurance lapse, they dropped me like a hot potato. I was then out of insurance and no one wanted to take me on except one high-risk, super-expensive insurance company! Lesson learned!!VickieSent from a spoiled little iPad
If you really can't afford to replace it, you could see if it is covered by homeowners or renters insurance.
