That employee should have been fired. It doesn't matter if the action that caused the damage was stupid, he should have simply said the warranty doesn't cover that damage here are your options for repair or replacement.

oh definitely, my daughter took her iphone into a mac shop at one time and the employee literally told her that the warranty didn't cover her stupidity :P
