Re: [iPad] OT: Feral cats

In light of the recent topic of feral cars endangering birds, I came upon an interesting statistic. According to Jim Sterba in "Nature Wars: Story of HowWildlife Comebacks Turned Backyads into Battlegrounds" the population of feral cats in America is between 60 and 100 million.

Wish I could remember where I read it so y'all could refer to it, but I read a report or a study where they inventoried stomach contents of feral cats and found that there were very few bird traces, most of the stuff eaten was small rodents. Which makes some sense to me but doesn't mean it's true.  :-)

I have a cat who is both indoor and outdoor.  I've never seen her with a bird but she's a big fan of mice :).

1. Not finding birds in their stomachs doesn't mean they didn't kill birds.

2. "Many cat owners are familiar with the "presents" that feline friends leave on doorsteps after a night on the prowl -- a bird's head or a dead mouse. All those cats have a giant cumulative effect, killing anywhere from 500 million to a billion birds every year, according to estimates from theAmerican Bird Conservancy."
