The Govt was elected, so its been mandated the power. Aren't they in this case motivated by security concerns, and their ability to covertly access information that can help them secure your country as much as is practical?

The government is motivated solely by power. Businesses are motivated primarily by profits. The government needs Apple to obey, and Apple, in order to make more money, needs the information the government's withholding. They'll compromise, but we'll not hear about that.
