Re: [iPad] What does "unlocked" mean?

If you go to Apple for an iPhone or Samsung for whatever is their latest model and pay the full $1000 to $1200 for the phone, it will be unlocked and you will be able to take it to any provider you wish.

Thats what paying RRP and buying an unlocked phone allows.

I get that. But if I buy a phone outright from Apple for $1,000, it should not be tied to a carrier. I should not owe a carrier any loyalty if their service isn't up to my expectations. I should be able to switch from AT&T to Verizon or T-mobile, or any of them, and back again.
With a landline, I buy the phone and choose the service. With a TV, I can choose any cable company in my area. And change back and forth.
I should be able to do that with an iPhone that I buy outright.
And BTW, cell phone companies are trying to do away with contracts, going instead with monthly payments for a phone and the right to get a new one each year.

To get a $650 phone for $200 it is necessary for the carrier to recuperate their costs in order to do that they must lock your phone to their network for the duration of the contract
