The main objective, firstly is to ensure that it does what it is expected to do.
Elegance of code or optimisation of other parameters is secondary for open source coders.
Only in case of corporate copyrighted software, there is special effort made to speed up, reduce memory requirement etc.
These are activities which are not much recognised.
