I didn't know that the original poster was talking about backpacking. I thought they needed to charge their devices while traveling in a vehicle. I've been using an inverter for over 15 years and it fits the bill perfectly and it's also the most inexpensive solution. Nothing is cheaper than an inverter and it has the extra benefit of being able to charge anything.
