Some storage can be used up without your notice:
The free tunes from iTunes and Starbucks tend to collect
Free videos and podcasts are a problem for me
Voice recorder files do not get trashed automatically; you have to delete them on your own
It is even possible that not restarting could leave junk temp files around -- restart it once.

Be aware, though, that resetting the whole package can mean losing files that don't get pushed to desktop. I'm mainly thinking of stuff created in apps. I lost a Keynote file, a long shopping list, and a small daily log once because I hadn't moved those files to desktop.
