> I am still in a quandary about photos, photo albums and deleting photos. I have been putting some of my photos in specific galleries for instance "cats". Is there anyway at all to delete a photo from the camera roll and not have it deleted in the album "cats"?
When you go to a Camera Roll image and tell the iPad to put it in an album, what happens is that the iPad *TAGS* the image with a label that tells the iPad to display that image in that album.
It does not remove the image from Camera Roll, and it does not duplicate the Camera Roll image elsewhere, in an album.
If you then delete the Camera Roll image, you delete the only copy of the file, AND its tag, and it will "disappear" from the album it was assigned to.
> I don't want to use up space with what looks like duplicate photos.
You aren't wasting any space, or duplicating it.

Copy it to you computer, make a "cats" album on your computer, sync that album from your computer to your iPad, and then you can remove the image from camera roll.
(You do have the Camera Roll backed up on your computer, right?)
