Re: [iPad] Deleting photos

So where is - which is - the original?  Which one is not the link?  I presume that one must not be deleted.  Since I cannot see the link marker on the file, how do I know?

There is a good reason -- a design principle -- for what is going on, and it is nearly the same in iTunes.
One single database (folder) for all items, and symbolic links to those items (along with metadata) to organize them.
The benefit is that, in the main storage device, files do not occupy more space just because they are in more playlists or photo albums. They remain only in the main database. (Although edited photos in iPhoto are stored alongside originals, so that original data is not destroyed.)

If you sync with a computer, allow it to delete images from camera roll and you will feel more control over which images are stored n the tablet. (That is, only the ones in albums.)

Tip for everyone:
Create a smart album for the last 3 events synched and you'll always have the most recent pics loaded, even if you didn't add them to albums yet.

I don't really understand the reason for doing it that way. If I put an image in an album I would really not rather see it in the camera roll and/or photo stream also even if they are not duplicates.

There's no duplication, only one copy which is "aliased" to albums that you put them into.

There has probably been this discussion before but I am still in a quandary about photos, photo albums and deleting photos. I have been putting some of my photos in specific galleries for instance "cats". Is there anyway at all to delete a photo from the camera roll and not have it deleted in the album "cats"? I don't want to use up space with what looks like duplicate photos. If I put it in the "cats" gallery I would like to remove it from the camera roll.
