There is no ideal size for a phone, aside from each of us individually.
Apple didn't screw up. They made a larger phone, sales show they didn't screw up. They made a 4" also, 5C. Now they just updated the 5C. IMHO, this is largely as phone sales are about to slide for everyone. Everywhere I look, its the same comment, mature. People will keep the phone longer as its the law of diminishing returns, each upgrade offers less and less.

Really? You must live in a different world than I. Its a 6S in a 4" flavour. I think its a sound move, it will grab some sales it might have lost, or not got till a time in the future. But sets the bar so far ahead? Hmm.

A question for our own selves. Is it really about the price? Or the ideal size of a phone?
Apple is afraid of admitting they screwed up with the iPhone 6 and the larger screen size. They have been battling competition with Samsung, and the iPhone SE basically sets the bar so far ahead for phones this size now, that it will take time for competition to understand, that a phone basically should fit in the palm and be operated with a single hand.
The iPhone SE has all its buttons in the right place, and performance of the iPhone 6S which is brilliant.
I think it's a good step by Apple. The price, yes is attractive and certainly increase their footprint in emerging markets where the 6S was a prohibitive purchase for students and young middle class generation.
I wrote an article on my blog a few hours before the release about the ideal sizes of devices, if anyone is interested.
Regards.
